One earbud is quieter than the other: wax, contact grime, and the reset you have not done

The complaint arrives as trust issues - "the left one is broken, these were a year old" - and in most pairs the left one is fine, the right one is doing exactly what it was told, and the problem is three millimetres of mesh, two charging contacts, or a pairing table that lost one member. Work the ladder in order and the repair bill dissolves.

The torch check first

Remove the silicone tips (they come off with a pinch and a quarter-turn), hold the bud against light and look at the metal mesh under the nozzle. Earwax against a mesh is a concrete plug the ear never signals - no pain, no warning, just volume loss that crept. For that: brush the mesh dry with a clean toothbrush, flat and sideways; for stubborn wax, a cotton bud damp (never wet) in warm water or isopropyl on the mesh face only, laid face-down to dry for half an hour - the driver does not like liquid and the nozzle is one membrane away. The silicone tips themselves take hot water and soap; they are the only part of the bud that does. This single fix out-performs every "earphone cleaner" gadget, and it is why the gym bag is the warranty killer: wax plus lint packed by twisting a bud in.

The charging-contact clean for 'one side never lasts as long'

If the quiet side is also the side whose battery reads low in the phone's widget every morning, the fault is upstream in the case: the charging pins in the cavity and the contacts on the bud stem pick up skin oils, and a dirty contact charges at a trickle - the left cell lives fully, the right starts its day short. Two dry swipes - a folded paper towel or a bud with a touch of alcohol - down into each cavity and across each stem, let dry, ten full minutes in the case, re-pair. The same dirt in the case's charging slot is also the "the case never charges" story with the same ten-second answer.

Reset, balance, and the honest last resort

When both buds are clean and charged but one side is still a step behind, treat it as a logistics problem, not a hardware one: unpair the device from Bluetooth entirely, buds in the case, hold the case button ten seconds to factory-reset them, then pair once, fresh. One-sided audio has a settings trapdoor too - Accessibility - Audio Balance - the slider every operating system carries and a pocket every press has moved; centred means centred on both numbers. The last-resort honest bit: a bud that survived the torch, the case, the reset and the slider with a still-quiet driver has a detached voice coil or a flooded one (a wash-cycle casualty), and the repair cost crosses the product value at anything short of flagship - which is exactly the buying maths: buds are consumables with a wax budget, and the pairs that survive a year are the ones whose owners know what the torch check is.
