Windows Update is stuck, failing or looping — what actually works

A stuck update feels like a broken computer, but the sequence has more patience than most people give it. Windows Update failures have a short list of real causes — a interrupted download, a full drive, a driver disagreement, or the update service itself hiccuping — and they are fixable in that order.

Step zero: patience with a deadline

Updates install in stages and restart themselves; an hour of "working on updates" on a slow drive is normal. The honest deadline is two to three hours with no disk activity (listen, or watch the drive light). Past that, a hard restart is safe — the installer is designed to roll back and retry.

1. The boring causes first

Free storage (updates need real room — see the triage list if the drive is packed), a stable power connection, and no pending restart ignored for weeks. A surprising share of "stuck" updates are three queued restarts deep.

2. The built-in troubleshooter

Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Windows Update → Run. It resets the update components that genuinely get stuck and knows the common failure patterns. Microsoft also ships a standalone version for repeated failures. Run it, restart, try again.

3. Read the error, then the manual path

The failure code (something like 0x800f0922) is a name, not noise — searching the exact code finds the specific fix. The general-purpose manual path is well-supported: stop the update services, rename the SoftwareDistribution folder so Windows rebuilds its download cache cleanly, restart the services, and let it fetch fresh. 4. The professional line

Updates that fail repeatedly after a clean retry, fail in safe mode too, or arrive with boot problems belong to a repair shop — so do any fix involving system files you are not certain about. Updates matter (they carry the security fixes), but a bricked weekend costs more than an hour of professional time.

While it heals

Pause is not failure: Settings lets you pause updates for up to a few weeks while you sort the machine calmly — just do not let the pause become the permanent state, because the browser and 2FA can only protect an updated system so much.
