Moving costs explained: what movers really charge (and how not to overpay)

In one line: Directional 2026 ranges for local and long-distance moves, what moves the price, the three-quote rule, and an editable moving cost estimator.

The 60-second answer. Americans pay about $3,020 on average per move (This Old House’s 1,000-customer survey), but the honest bands are wider: a local move (under ~50 miles) runs $80–$100/hour for a two-mover team — about $1,250 for a 2–3 bedroom home, from $260 for a studio done cheaply. A long-distance move averages $4,500–$5,000, ranging roughly $2,700–$7,800 by weight and miles — and a 4-bedroom household with full packing service crossing the country can cross $15,000. (All 2026 US industry guides — directional, not quotes.)

The estimator below models your actual move — size, miles, extras — and shows the pro range against the full-DIY alternative.

Section 3 · What moves the price

  • Season. June–August is peak — book early and expect the top of every range; mid-month, mid-week winter dates get the bottom.
  • Stairs, long carries, no elevator. The physical difficulty surcharge — declare it or watch it appear on truck day.
  • Weight, honestly assessed. Long-distance pricing is weight × distance: every unopened box you donate before the estimate is money kept (decluttering pays twice).
  • Packing. DIY-packed boxes save the $350–$600 — but movers’ insurance can treat your packed boxes differently. Ask what’s covered.

Section 4 · The three-quote rule (and the scam radar)

  • Three written, itemised estimates — in-home or video survey for anything long-distance. Binding or “not-to-exceed” quotes are the gold standard; vague hourly “ballparks” grow.
  • Red flags: big cash deposits before truck day, no written inventory, no company address, quotes that only arrive after “checking a truck’s route”, and any request to pay the balance before your goods are delivered.
  • The hostage-fee scam (goods held for an inflated “final” bill) is the known worst case — the binding quote and a licensed, addressable company are the defence. In the US, verify interstate movers at the FMCSA’s mover search.

Section 5 · Regional notes (US · UK · CA)

RegionWhat to expect (checked 12 Sep 2026 — directional)
USHourly local ($40–$100/mover-hr), weight×distance interstate; FMCSA regulates interstate movers
UKRemoval firms quote per day/job; add VAT (20%); a typical family removal lands £300–£1,500 locally (directional) — get BAR-accredited firms for long hauls
CanadaStructures mirror the US in CAD; interprovincial moves price like US long-distance; peak season is May–September

FAQ

How much do movers cost for a local move?
2026 US guide range: $80–$100/hour for a two-mover team (up to $210 in premium markets), with 2–4 hour minimums and a 1–2 hour travel fee. Average local move: about $1,250.

How much is a long-distance move?
Around $4,500–$5,000 on average, in a $2,700–$7,800 band by weight and miles. Cross-country with packing for a large home can exceed $15,000.

Is it cheaper to move yourself?
Locally, usually yes ($200–$900 vs $350–$2,600) — if your time is free and nothing breaks. Long-distance DIY saves less than people expect once fuel, lodging and one-way rentals are counted.

What’s the cheapest month to move?
Off-peak: October through April, mid-month, mid-week. Peak summer pricing is the top of every range.

How do I avoid moving scams?
Three written estimates, binding or not-to-exceed pricing, verified licensing (FMCSA in the US), no big cash deposits, and nothing paid in full before delivery.
