The sink that drains slowly: trap, plughole, plunger, then the pipe
In one line: Clear the food and hair at the top before you attack the pipe, know when a trap clean is enough, and stop before chemical drain cleaner makes the next repair dangerous.
A slow sink is a blockage ladder, not an invitation to pour every bottle under the sink into one another. Food, hair and grease usually collect at the plughole or in the trap before the wall pipe; each location has a different safe fix. The water level tells you how far to go: a sink that drains after a minute is a small restriction, while several fixtures backing up points beyond this basin.
The clean order
- Remove the visible plug. Lift the strainer, wipe the underside, and pull out the material you can see. In a kitchen, scrape fats and starch into waste rather than rinsing them into the pipe; hot water can move grease farther down before it cools again.
- Plunge with a seal. Add enough water to cover the plunger cup, block the overflow opening with a wet cloth, and use firm strokes. A double sink needs the second bowl sealed or the pressure escapes there. Do not plunge after pouring caustic cleaner, because a splash makes the next step a skin and eye injury.
- Clean the trap. Put a bowl under the U-shaped section, undo the slip nuts by hand or with light tool help, and let the water fall into the bowl. Clean the trap, check its washer, and refit it squarely. A trap packed with sludge is a cheap, visible win; overtightening the plastic threads is how the leak begins.
- Use a hand snake if needed. Feed a small flexible auger into the open pipe slowly, turn it, withdraw it, and flush with warm water. If resistance is deep, the cable returns dirty without improving flow, or another fixture rises when this sink drains, stop and move the diagnosis to the branch or main line.
The line that saves the house
Never mix drain chemicals, never reach into a pipe whose cleaner you cannot identify, and never assume a strong smell means a strong solution is working. Chemical products can damage old seals and leave a caustic puddle for the person who opens the trap next. If the sink is slow only when the washing machine or another large fixture discharges, the branch needs a proper inspection. Once clear, keep the strainer fitted, wipe pans before washing, and clean the trap as a maintenance job rather than waiting for the basin to become a small pond.
