The sofa's cracks start in the harmattan: the two-season care that keeps vinyl supple and leather honest
In one line: What sun actually does to a covering, the clean-and-feed rhythm in the right season, and the three products the finish will resent.
Upholstery fails on a calendar, not an accident: the dry weeks pull the plasticisers out of vinyl and the moisture out of real leather, the afternoon sun's window-light bakes both on the side that faces it, and the first visible result - the pale sheen, the fine crazing at the seat's crease - is already the mid-stage of a process the household can only slow, never reverse. What the two seasons allow is a routine that takes an afternoon at each turn and decides how the fifth year looks.
Know which covering the sofa actually is
The test the sales floor does not offer: lift a seat cushion and look at the underside and the back panel - real leather's reverse is a fibrous suede, vinyl's is a cloth or knit grid; 'PU' and the coated-corrected classes sit between, and their care is the vinyl chapter's, because the finish on top is the thing being fed. The distinction earns its keep at the product step: leather's conditioners are oils and waxes that a vinyl cannot drink, and the vinyl's silicone dressings would leave leather greasy and its stitching damp. The label or the seller's own specification settles it in writing when the underside test is ambiguous.
The rhythm, by season, with the three product bans
- Harmattan's opening week - clean first: the dust that rides the season is abrasive, and every sit grinds it into the finish like sandpaper on a lens; the weekly dry wipe (soft cloth, along the creases, the seams where the grit lines up like a grout) is the habit that prevents the crazing's first scratch. Real leather then gets its gentle soap-only clean - the damp cloth with the pH-neutral leather soap the maker's own care leaflet names, never the kitchen degreaser, never detergent foam that strips the finish's oils in one enthusiastic afternoon.
- Harmattan's middle - feed: leather takes a thin coat of its conditioner (the cream the maker sells or names - the desk's general sentence, since the product shelf changes and the finish's chemistry does not); vinyl gets its water-based protectant if the maker offers one, and silicone spray - the ban the next paragraph prints - is the shortcut that costs the next owner.
- The rains - fight the other enemy: damp is vinyl's mould-bed and leather's stain-maker; the room's airflow habit from the wardrobe and mattress pages applies to the seat's underside, and a sofa that has met a flooded floor gets the desk's clean-and-dry sequence from the flooded-room guide, not this page's polish.
The three products the finish resents, in the order of their damage: silicone dressings (the instant shine that migrates the plasticiser it borrows - vinyl gleams for a week and cracks faster for years, and any future repair or re-cover finds the surface refuses adhesive); the car-dashboard shine wipes whose solvents lift printed vinyl's ink layer in patches that start under the magazine and end under the lamp; and the sponge-and-soap of the general cleaner's day - soaking the seam is how leather's backing swells and vinyl's cloth grid rusts through its printed face, the two slowest deaths upholstery has.
Position is half the routine
The afternoon sun is the single biggest aging variable the household controls: the sofa moved a metre from the window's beam, the blind's rule on the west side through the hottest hours, the throw across the seat that catches the light daily - each one buys years at zero maintenance cost, and the desk files the faded-backrest-and-bright-seat-front contrast as the evidence no conditioner can polish away. The cushion rotation week-about (the reversible ones flipped end for end as well) spreads the sun and the crease, and the crease is where the crazing starts, so the five-minute habit is the anti-crack treatment the marketing never mentions.
What no care routine reaches
Split vinyl that has gone through to its cloth, the leather's dry rot at the seams where the backing has powdered, the foam that has collapsed and now flexes the finish past its stretch - all are re-cover conversations, and the honest re-cover economics belong to the workshop's quote, not to this page's shelf. The routine's promise, stated without flattery: on a sound sofa it doubles the life of the face and keeps it looking fed at year five; on a dead one it is a kind way to postpone the truth.
The desk's standing rule
Wipe the dust weekly through the dry season, feed once at its middle, fight the damp at the rains, and keep the window off the face - four habits, two seasons, one afternoon's work each. Upholstery is the only furniture in the house that gets sat on, leaned on and sunned daily; it keeps the receipts in its creases, and the creases are the page's entire argument.
