Projector or TV for movie nights: the honest decision

A projector promises a hundred-inch picture for the price of a mid-range TV, and the promise is real — conditionally. The honest decision is made by answering one question first: how dark can your room get? Everything else follows from it.

Light is the whole argument

Projectors lose to ambient light — a bright room washes out contrast long before it washes out brightness. A TV fights daylight far better because it is its own light source at high panel brightness. If your movie nights are evening-and-dark-room affairs, a projector is magic. If they are Sunday-afternoon family viewing with the curtains open, the TV wins and it is not close. Blackout curtains are the cheapest upgrade in home cinema and they can flip the verdict.

Lumens: believe the measured, doubt the marketed

Brightness claims on cheap projectors are the least trustworthy numbers in consumer electronics — marketing "lumens" are routinely inflated several-fold against measured (ANSI) lumens. The desk's rule: buy on reviews that measure, not on the box number; be suspicious of a "4000-lumen" claim on a sub-£/$400 machine. For a dark room and a 90–110-inch image, a genuinely measured 1,500–2,500 ANSI lumens-class machine does the job; bright rooms need far more or a TV.

The rest of the honest checklist

Resolution: native 1080p is fine at sofa distance; "4K support" on input is not native 4K — check which. Throw distance: standard-throw needs roughly 2.5–3+ metres; short-throw models sit close to the wall — measure before buying, not after. Fans and noise: every projector has one; small rooms hear it. Audio: built-in projector speakers are almost uniformly bad — budget for a soundbar from day one. Lamp life: LED and laser light sources last dramatically longer than traditional bulbs and cost less to own over years. The verdict the desk gives friends

Dark room, evening habit, want the cinema scale: projector, without hesitation — the size-per-pound value is unanswerable. Mixed daylight use, casual convenience, sports with the curtains open: TV. And for many homes the honest answer is a good mid-range TV now and the projector when the room (or the budget) is genuinely ready — the catalogue of films you want to watch on either is the same shelf either way.
