The crowd-pleasers
The Wedding Party (2016) is the modern gateway: a Lagos wedding where two families collide, glossy and genuinely funny, and the film that proved Nollywood comedies could break box-office records at home. Lionheart (2018), Genevieve Nnaji's directorial debut, is the gentler prestige entry — a daughter fighting to keep her father's transport company, and the film that became Nigeria's first Netflix original acquisition (and its disqualifying Oscar story, over the English-language rule).
The hard edges
93 Days (2016) retells the doctors who contained Lagos's Ebola outbreak with procedural tension and real restraint. Oloture (2019) follows a journalist undercover among trafficked sex workers — unflinching, and one of the strongest Nigerian films of its decade. The epics
The Milkmaid (2020), set against the insurgency in the northeast, became Nigeria's second Oscar submission and plays as a quiet survival story with enormous political weight. And for sheer scale, Anikulapo (2022) draws on Yoruba mythology with a production ambition the older canon never had.
The honest context: the classic VHS-era Nollywood of the 1990s and 2000s — the straight-to-video era that built the industry — is a different aesthetic world from today's cinema releases, and streaming platforms have only begun cataloguing either. Start with the six above, and the industry's actual shape — family drama, faith, hustle, humour, all shot at speed — assembles itself. Few film cultures reward curiosity faster.
