I didn't even want to watch Prison Break at first.
That probably sounds strange considering how highly I rate it now.
But I've always had this problem with heavily hyped movies and series. When everybody keeps telling me something is the greatest thing ever, I start expecting it to be disappointing.
Prison Break was one of those shows.
Then one day, I had some free MTN data and thought, basically, why not waste it?
So I downloaded Prison Break.
That decision completely changed my opinion.
Michael Scofield's Plan Was Crazy
The premise alone is enough to make you curious.
Michael Scofield deliberately gets himself sent to prison because his brother, Lincoln Burrows, is facing execution for a crime Michael believes he didn't commit.
But Michael doesn't simply walk into prison hoping to figure things out later.
He already has a plan.
And the craziest part?
The prison is tattooed across his body.
When I first saw that, I was thinking:
How the hell did this guy even plan all of this?
The tattoo isn't just there to make Michael look cool.
It's part of a much larger plan.
Every piece has a purpose, and slowly you begin to understand why he went to such extreme lengths before entering the prison.
That was the moment Prison Break stopped feeling like just another prison series to me.
The Prison Was Supposed to Be Impossible to Escape
Fox River isn't presented as somewhere you can simply walk out of.
It's a prison designed to keep people inside.
That's what makes Michael's plan so interesting.
He's not trying to escape from an empty building.
He's trying to escape from a place where guards, locked doors, schedules, surveillance and other prisoners are constantly working against him.
And then there are the unexpected problems.
Because Michael can plan almost everything, but he can't control everybody.
Everyone Has Their Own Game
One of the things I loved about Season 1 was the way the prison felt like its own world.
Michael has his plan.
But other prisoners have their own plans.
Some want freedom.
Some want revenge.
Some want money.
Some want to manipulate Michael.
Others simply want to survive.
So the escape isn't just one man's master plan.
It's a collection of different agendas constantly crashing into each other.
And that makes the story unpredictable.
You can understand what Michael is trying to do and still have no idea whether he's actually going to pull it off.
The Conspiracy Makes Everything Bigger
At first, you might think the story is simply about getting Lincoln out of prison.
Then you realize there is something much bigger happening.
The situation surrounding Lincoln's conviction leads into a conspiracy that makes Michael's escape plan even more complicated.
Suddenly, escaping isn't enough.
There are people outside the prison who want certain things to happen.
There are people inside the prison who have their own interests.
And Michael has to keep adapting.
That's what makes the series so gripping.
Season 1 Makes You Want the Next Episode
This is where Prison Break absolutely destroyed my expectations.
Once I started watching Season 1, I didn't want to stop.
There was always another problem.
Another obstacle.
Another piece of the plan that needed to be solved.
You finish one episode thinking you'll take a break.
Then you remember that Michael still has something to do.
So you watch another.
Then another.
And before you know it, it's late at night.
That's the kind of series Prison Break was for me.
It wasn't something I casually watched.
It pulled me in.
Why I Still Put It Above Breaking Bad
This is probably where people will disagree with me.
I know Breaking Bad is considered one of the greatest American television series ever made.
I've watched it.
I've genuinely tried to understand the hype.
But it never reached the level Prison Break reached for me.
That's not saying Breaking Bad is badly made.
It's simply about what grips me as a viewer.
Prison Break had me constantly asking:
How are they going to get out of this?
And that question kept me watching.
For me, no American series I've watched has beaten that feeling.
Don't Make the Mistake I Made
There's one thing I learned the hard way while watching Prison Break.
There is an additional movie that connects to the later story.
I didn't know that.
So when I finished one part of the series and jumped straight into the next section, I became completely confused.
For a while, I couldn't understand what had happened.
Then I found out that I had skipped an important piece of the story.
I went back and watched it.
Suddenly everything made sense.
So if you're watching Prison Break for the first time, don't randomly skip the additional story just because it isn't another normal season.
The extra movie matters to the overall experience.
Why Season 1 Still Works
Prison Break Season 1 has something that is surprisingly difficult to create.
It makes you believe that the plan might actually work while constantly giving you reasons to think it won't.
Michael is intelligent, but he's not in complete control.
The prison has rules.
The prisoners have their own agendas.
The conspiracy keeps expanding.
And every step toward freedom creates another problem.
That's why the tattoo remains one of the most memorable ideas in the series.
It wasn't just a tattoo.
It was the blueprint for a plan that had been built before Michael ever stepped through the prison gates.
And that's why, after all these years and all the hype surrounding other American series, my answer hasn't changed:
For me, Prison Break is still the one to beat.
