How the Premier League table works — points, tiebreakers, and the playoff nobody has needed
In one line: Three points for a win, goal difference after that, and the one scenario English football has never actually settled on the pitch.
Every week from August to May, twenty clubs play, and the table turns those results into a single ranking. The mechanics are simple until the moment they suddenly are not — so here is the whole system, in order.
Points first, always
A win is worth three points, a draw one, a defeat none. Clubs are ranked by total points, and that is the entire first rule. Everything else only matters when two or more clubs finish level on points — which happens, but far less often than relegation battles and title races make it feel.
The tiebreakers, in order
If clubs finish level on points, the Premier League separates them first by goal difference — goals scored minus goals conceded across the whole season. If still level, by goals scored. The famous 2012 title was decided in the final seconds of the final day partly because both contenders kept winning; goal difference races run all season for exactly this reason. Notice what is not on the list: head-to-head results. Unlike many European leagues, the Premier League does not rank clubs on their meetings with each other.
The playoff nobody has ever needed
If two clubs are still inseparable — level on points, goal difference and goals scored — the rules provide for a one-off playoff at a neutral venue. It has never happened in the Premier League era. It exists so that the season can always produce a final answer on the pitch, not in a committee room.
What the positions are worth

Reading a table in September
One habit worth stealing: read the columns in order. Points are the truth; goal difference is the tiebreaker waiting; goals scored breaks the next tie. A club seventh on nine points with a plus-five difference is a genuinely different animal from a club seventh on nine with minus-one — and after three games, that is the honest level of any conclusion.
