How much water should you actually drink in a day?

In one line: Where the eight-glasses rule came from, what official guidance says, why thirst works, and the honest signs of drinking enough - all as general information.

The famous answer is eight glasses a day. The honest answer is that there was never a strong scientific birth certificate for that number - it survives because it is simple, memorable, and roughly right for many people. Here is the version worth keeping.

What the guidance actually says

Reference bodies put total daily fluid needs for most adults somewhere around 2 to 3.7 litres - a wide range, on purpose. Two honest complications: that is total water, including the water inside food (fruit, soup, porridge, vegetables - roughly a fifth to a third of intake for many people), and needs swing enormously with body size, climate and activity. Someone walking outdoors in Lagos heat needs far more than someone in an air-conditioned office. Treat any single number, including these, as orientation rather than prescription.

Thirst is a better instrument than a tally

For most healthy people, thirst is a well-tuned signal - drink when thirsty, a little more than feels strictly necessary, and the day takes care of itself. The two useful checks: thirst through the day (frequent thirst means earlier sips) and urine colour (pale yellow is the target; dark means drink, completely clear usually means you are overshooting). Athletes, pregnant women, older adults (whose thirst blunts) and anyone in heat or illness should lean on schedule rather than thirst - that is the one group where counting earns its keep.

Can you drink too much?

Rarely, but yes - extreme water intake in short windows can dilute the blood's sodium dangerously. It is essentially unheard of at ordinary drinking paces; the risk belongs to hours-long endurance events and dares. Spreading intake across the day, as the morning-water habit starts naturally, is all the engineering required.

The keepable version

A glass on waking, water with meals, a bottle within reach, thirst as the day's guide, pale-yellow as the check. That is the whole practice - no app required. It pairs with the rest of the plate: fruit is water-rich food, and caffeine timing matters more for how you feel than the water-cooler myths admit. General information, not medical advice - kidney, heart or medication questions belong with a professional.
