How to start going to the gym: your first visit, planned hour by hour

In one line: The fear, the floor plan, and a 45-minute first session anyone can walk in and do - plus what weeks one to four actually look like.

The hardest part of the gym is the door. Not the weights - the door. This page walks you through it: what to expect, exactly what to do in your first 45 minutes, and what the first month looks like. Written for the person who has never touched a barbell.

First, the truth nobody tells you

Nobody is watching you. Regulars are locked in on their own sets, their playlists, their rest timers. The spotlight you feel does not exist - every lifter in that room was once the new person who did not know where the plates were. Ask any of them; most will light up to help.

Your first visit, hour by hour

Minutes 0-10: the tour. Walk the floor slowly with your phone in your pocket and your eyes open. Find the stretching area, the dumbbells, the machines, the water. You are not training yet; you are mapping territory. Ask the front desk for a walkthrough - that is literally part of their job.

Minutes 10-20: warm up. Five to ten easy minutes on any cardio machine, then the routine from how to warm up. Nobody remembers the new person warming up. They remember nothing about you - that is the point.

Minutes 20-45: the first session. Do exactly three machine exercises, two light sets of ten each: a chest press, a seated row, a leg press. Machines are the beginner's friend - they guide the path, they are labelled with instructions, and they cannot fall on you. Then stretch, drink water, leave. That is a real workout. You went to the gym and trained. Week one is complete.

Weeks one to four

Week 1: three visits, machines only, two light sets per exercise. Learn the geography. Week 2: same machines, three sets now, note the weights - the numbers are yours, nobody else's. Week 3: add one dumbbell exercise per visit - a goblet squat is the traditional gateway. Week 4: you are a person who goes to the gym. The workout builder now has something to build on.

What to bring

Trainers or flat shoes, a water bottle, a small towel, and clothes you can move in. That is the entire list. Everything else is marketing.

Unwritten rules for not annoying the regulars are on gym etiquette for first timers. Not ready for the gym at all? Starting from zero and the exercise library work with a floor and a door frame. Numbers and timelines here are general guidance, not medical advice.
