Eight stretches for people who sit all day

In one line: The desk body's daily five minutes: neck, shoulders, hips and back - the movements that undo eight hours of sitting, no equipment, no floor.

Eight hours of sitting writes a predictable story into the body: hips that forget how to extend, a upper back that rounds, a neck that creeps forward, shoulders that curl. This is the five-minute daily counter-story - eight movements, no equipment, doable beside a desk in office clothes.

The eight, in order

1. Chin tucks. Sit tall, glide the chin straight back (not down) making a double chin; hold two seconds, repeat ten. The single best antidote to screen-neck.

2. Neck side release. Hand over head, ear toward shoulder - gentle pull, twenty seconds each side. No pulling through pain, ever.

3. Chest opener in the doorframe. Forearms on the frame, elbows level, step through gently - twenty to thirty seconds. The direct undo of the keyboard curl.

4. Thoracic extension over the chair. Hands behind head, arch the mid-back over the chair's top edge, five slow reps. The mid-back is where sitting stiffness pools.

5. Seated spinal twist. Tall sit, hand on the chair back, rotate gently - twenty seconds each side.

6. Hip flexor lunge. One knee down (or a deep staggered stand), hips forward, squeeze the rear glute - thirty seconds each side. The anti-sitting stretch; the hips' daily bread.

7. Hamstring hinge. Heel on a low step, tall spine, hinge at the hips - twenty seconds each leg.

8. Shoulder rolls and wall slides. Ten slow rolls, then ten slides against a wall - elbows and wrists touching as best they can. Ends the routine with the shoulder blades actually moving.

The frequency that matters

Daily beats deep. Five minutes every workday does more than an hour-long class on Sunday - the desk reshapes you by repetition, so you unshape it by repetition too. Set a recurring afternoon alarm; pair it with the coffee run. And the stretches are the counterweight, not the cure-all: alternating positions through the day, a lunchtime walk - the habit has a whole month mapped out - and a core that can actually hold you up are the rest of the desk-body repair kit.
