How to write a strong query letter
A concise query that gets attention for nonfiction and journalism.
A query letter sells a nonfiction piece before it exists. It should make the editor want the story.
Lead with the idea. First line: what the article is, in one sentence.
Show what you will report. Who you will talk to, what you will investigate, and why you are the one to do it.
Give a clear angle. Not “we should talk about X” but “this piece argues / reveals / shows Y.”
State the length and any deadline. Tell the editor what you are proposing and how long it will take.
End with credibility. A line on your experience and any publication credits.
