How to use it. Enter what you need to earn in a year after tax. Add your business expenses and your tax rate, then be honest about how many hours a week you can genuinely bill — for most freelance writers it is 15 to 25, not 40. The calculator grosses everything up and gives you an hourly, per-word and per-piece figure.

Why it matters. Most writers price by copying whatever number they saw someone else quote, then discover they are working sixty hours to earn less than a salary. Two things cause it. First, tax and expenses come out before you get paid, so the invoice has to be larger than your target. Second, only a fraction of your week is billable — pitching, admin, invoicing and chasing late payment are real hours that no client pays for. Pricing as though every hour is billable is the single most common way freelance writers underprice themselves.
