About this tool

How to use the character counter.

What it does. Counts every character in your text, spaces and line breaks included, live as you type or paste.

How to use it. Paste your text into the box and read the count as it updates. Use it against a hard limit: a meta description should stay under about 160 characters, a social post has its own ceiling, and many submission forms cut off silently after a set number.

Why it matters. Character limits are everywhere in a writing life - headlines, captions, bios, pitch forms - and the fastest way to lose a submission is guessing. Ten seconds here beats a truncated form.

Your data. The tool runs entirely in your browser - text you paste never leaves the page, and nothing is uploaded to a server.

Good to know

Counts update live as you edit, so trimming to a limit is a process of watching the number, not repeated pasting. Line breaks count as characters in most form fields - if your text has hard wraps, remove them first for the honest figure.

Where this fits

Counting tools answer one question precisely: how much? They matter at the boundaries - the limit on a form, the length an editor asked for, the session you promised yourself. Used once, a counter answers a question; used as a habit, it keeps your work inside the frames that get it read.
