About this tool

How to use the writing structure quiz.

What it does. Eight multiple-choice questions on the mechanics that hold writing together: the lede's real job, the inverted pyramid, the nut graf, three-act structure, show-don't-tell, skimmability, the through-line of meaning, and how professionals start a long piece.

How to use it. Pick an answer for each question - you get the correct answer and a one-line why immediately. Eight questions, about two minutes. Your score comes with a straight verdict, and Try again reruns the ones you missed.

Why it matters. Most writing problems are structure problems wearing a disguise. A piece that 'doesn't flow' usually has an unkept promise in its opening or moves that arrive in the wrong order. Name the mechanics and they become tools instead of luck.
