What it does. Words to pages for a specific, stated format — not a vague average.

How to use it. Enter your word count and pick the format the brief actually specifies. If you do not know the spec, use standard manuscript format, which is what most editors and agents mean. You also get read-aloud time, which is what you need for a speech or a video script.

Why it matters. “Pages” is not a unit of length. The same 1,000 words is four double-spaced pages or two single-spaced ones, and a printed book page holds different amounts again depending on trim size. This causes real problems: a student told to write “five pages” and a writer told “1,250 words” are being asked for the same thing, but only one of those instructions is unambiguous. If a brief gives you a page count, ask which spec it means. If you are submitting work, state the word count — that is what editors work from.
